In the academic year 2023/2024, a total of seventy-nine (79) new students were admitted into the
Department’s B.Sc. Forensic Science Programme. Four hundred and thirty-three (433) officers
from the Ghana Police Service were also admitted into the Post-Graduate Diploma in Security
Studies programme. An orientation programme for these newly admitted officers was organised
by the Department at the Ghana Police Training Academy in Accra in March 2024. The event
was attended by Senior Academic Staff of the Department, Dean of Students and a delegation of
administrative staff from the University, as well as Senior Officers of the Academy. The
Department continues to build on the practical field/skill-based learning approach, thereby
inculcating 21 st century skills into students. The Department is achieving this through its
engagement with institutions and organizations such as the Ghana Police Forensic Science
Laboratory, Cape Coast Circuit and High Courts, Ghana Prisons Service, and Ghana
Immigration Service. In this regard, the Department facilitated a student visit to the Cape Coast
High Court to observe court proceedings. To obtain a practice-directed learning, level 300
students enacted a crime scene scenario and presented their observations in a moot court as
“forensic experts”. The whole experience provided a real-world application of the skills required
of the modern forensic scientist. This is in line with the Department’s resolve to offer first class
training in the field of forensics.
Academic faculty in the Department have ongoing research activities in the following areas;
Investigative Forensics, Forensic Psychology (Criminal justice, Victim experiences in court),
Medicine (drug analysis) and Forensic Toxicology.
